“We will not be subjugated” or “Aloha, Col. Hand!”

First, a bit of historical fact:

In response to the Battles of Lexington and Concord, two Continental Congress resolutions, dated June 14, 1775, and June 22, 1775, authorized eight companies of riflemen to be raised in Pennsylvania, and organize into one rifle battalion.  All of the troops came from south central Pennsylvania counties including: Bedford, Berks, Cumberland, Lancaster, Northampton, Northumberland, and York.  All nine companies (Lancaster county raised two instead of one) were placed under the command of Col. William Thompson, of Carlisle, Cumberland County.  On July 1, 1775 the companies of “Thompson’s Pennsylvania Rifle Battalion” left York, and marched 400 miles to Boston, covering 16 miles per day.  The first of the battalion, from York County, reached Boston in 25 days.  The battalion was the first from south of the Hudson to arrive in Boston in 1775.  By the end of the war, the First Regiment had seen action in every one of the original thirteen colonies.

On January 1, 1776 there was a reorganization of the Continental Army, and Thompson’s Rifle Battalion became the First Continental Regiment. The direct command of the First Continental Regiment was given to Lieutenant Colonel Edward Hand in March 1776.  In a letter dated March 8, 1776, from Lieutenant Colonel Edward Hand, at Prospect Hill, to James Yeates, of Lancaster Pennsylvania, the 1st Continental Regiment Standard was described in future tense.  It is believed that the flag was created shortly after this date.  The extract read:

“Every Regiment is to have a Standard and Colours.  Our Standard is to be a deep green ground, the Device a Tyger partly enclosed by toils attempting the pass defended by a hunter armed with a spear in white, on crimson field the motto “Domari nolo.

The First Regiment’s flag was on a deep green silk background of three pieces with the center cut out of the middle piece for the canton.  In the center of the canton’s crimson field of silk was painted the scene of a hunter, armed with a spear, and a tiger enclosed by netting.   Not mentioned in Hand’s letter, the hunter’s spear is not white, and above the scene are the letters “P.M. 1st. Rt”.  This is believed to translate to “Pennsylvania Militia, 1st Regiment.  The motto “Domari Nolo” is Latin for “I refuse to be subjugated”.

This is one version of the story, and I choose to think that it is a valid explanation for the flag of the PA 1st.  I happened across this article, a scholarly style piece, while searching for my ancestry among the many men that served this country at it’s founding.

Growing up in the “Kittochtinney” or “endless hills”, (these are the Indian nomenclature- later known as the Blue Mountain, or Kittatinney Mountain) region of the South Central part of the Commonwealth has afforded a special type of kinship with nature, and a love for the lay of the land.  A brother of mine- kinship is crucial in this walk of life in my eyes- from Big Sky country joked with me, and still does, that we don’t know what real mountains look like in Pennsylvania.  Our mountains are just so old they’re worn down to nubs.

Not too bad a view… Down into the river valley of the Susquehanna…

“Because William Penn impartially offered liberty of conscience to all who were under religious persecution and made his province “an asylum for the good and oppressed of every nation;” because of the interesting and attractive natural features of the region; and because of the justice and liberality of the laws of the rapidly growing province; settles flocked into Penn’s State and quickly occupied the desirable sites in the lands which had been purchased from the Indians at the times these new inhabitants came into the province.”  (taken from here:http://mcdonaldfamily.info/genealogy/documents/Account%20of%20Fort%20Robinson%20Perry%20County%20Pennsylvania.php )  Today these same ideals are part of the drive and motivation behind this company I founded with my friends.  We’re all Pennsylvanians, and we’re enamored and awe-stricken at the beauty and potential that surrounds us in our Commonwealth.

This Commonwealth is known as the Keystone… And Domari Nolo is a part of that overall importance and significance.  We intend to bring a new type of business to the table.  We intend to BE that Keystone- by LEADING the industry in providing local solutions for global problems, or potential contingencies.

The first step in mitigation is situational awareness, and to that end I am proud to co-host http://www.globalg2.com/ on the radio show with my friend Neil Bigelow, as well as write on the blog portions and do my best to help edit.  You may even see me contribute in the “Scuttlebutt” forum- that’s going to lead it’s niche industry as well, I assure you.

We’ve got designs underway- game changing designs for clothing, kit, and tool.  We are bringing a mindset to the industry BEFORE bringing a product, and driving our design with not only our personal experiences and observations, but hopefully YOURS, as part of our family.  We’re going to be exhibiting projects that you can undertake at home, as well as feature articles and videos from vendors, inventors, tinkerers, and… well… YOU!

In other words:  We truly desire your direct participation in this company through the blog, forum, and training.  We consider your input to be important, and will make it so, bringing to the forefront the most functional examples.  The “Consulting” part of our name is not just fancy wording- We are listeners until answers begin to be discerned.  If there is no existing solution- we won’t rest until we find it with you.

We will work in conjunction with vendors and product manufacturers to make “off the shelf” product into more functional items, or provide signature enhancements.  We intend to invest just as much time personally testing these items, proving their value, and refining as needed.  We also know when to leave a great product alone, and we’re bringing plenty of that to you as well.  Wherever possible, we’re using Pennsylvania production or labor, and we encourage our partner organizations, product vendors, and client family to think with a similar local and regional consideration.  We’re each responsible with our true voting power, our wallets, for our own “back yard”, and we’d like to lead by example in that venue as well.  Of course we’ll do business with companies in other states, but we’re doing business with other like-minded companies in many instances.

You won’t have to do all the “trial and error“,  in short- WE will, or already have, and we’re ready to keep doing it.  We’re going to either drive the industry in a positive direction, or we’ll innovate to adapt and overcome.

Hang on, dear reader…  Not just because I am adjusting to this new medium (for me, at least).  I’m going to bring this Pennsylvania son’s perspective to a whole new level.  This is going to be a great experience- totally revolutionizing the industry of outdoor adventure, and specifically focused toward equipping and making proficient the most capable and modern hunters on the planet.

Most of all, Domari Nolo… I presume y’all already KNOW…
